The Grey Abyss

Find out what the future of humanity looks like... In "The Grey Abyss" you have moved forward in time. Years are now Cycles, Months - Alunars. See what what has happened the The Remnant.

As the grey abyss presses down on the armada, Knorack the First Warrior, has gone into a self-imposed seclusion. They’re completely abandoned in his absence and the ships are beginning to crumble under the seemingly endless wandering in cosmic nothingness.

The crew of the lead ship Sark has taken over the lower half of the ship and the officers don't dare try to take it back from the dangerous mutineers. The rest of the fleet is faring no better and the people lie on the precipice of starvation and utter demise. Surely, surely they aren’t destined for death. Not after all they had been through.

There’s no denying these are dark days, lost in the grey abyss and hope dwindles fast. It will take an astronomical miracle to save them.

Chapter 48
Fruitless Endeavor
Journal Entry - July 21st 2095
Lt Jason Knorack
This Damn game has gone on long enough. I’m going to confront the Captain…
Jason climbed aboard the shuttle and as predicted he was only allowed to bring two other investigators, a DNA scanner and a single bag of forensic tools.  It was going to be limiting, but Jason had to go and had to find something to tie Jordy to Julia.
The trip itself was uneventful, the arrival on the other hand went from bad to worse.  The shuttle made two passes over the sight and surrounding areas.  Lieutenant Finn, one of the triplets told Jason that his team would stay on the shuttle while they did a security sweep.  Jason disagreed and the argument escalated until Fin pointed his weapon at Jason and commanded him to stay in the shuttle.  Finn’s team departed the shuttle as Finn held Jason at gunpoint until shuttle’s doors closed, then Finn turn his weapon back to the air and gave Jason a smirk and snide salute.
Jason was furious, they would have an opportunity to clean up any evidence the Jordy left behind.  Each of the team members carried a variety of weapons and equipment.  They could have Tri-corders and other devices that they could use to erase what Jordy was looking for.  As the shuttle lifted, Jason moved to the window to watch the marines set up their so called security perimeter.  For the most part the team did as expected, each member took a vector and spread out to ensure the area was clear, except for Lieutenant Finn, he walked directly towards the building that the swept road lead to.  Jason punched the wall of the shuttle four times in his anger.
Breathing heavily Jason turned around and sank into the seat next to the door.  Tiffy just looked at him and asked with little emotion, “Did that help?”
Jason shook his head no.
“Are you injured.”  Tiffy continued.
Jason looked at his hand, it was read, but he did not cut himself open. Once he flexed his fingers he shook his head no again.
They circles for what seemed like an hour.  Then the shuttle was summonsed and the investigators were allowed to look at the scene.  There was little to find.  They found some scraps of material with no DNA evidence, some spilled fuel and oil, smashed crates that seemed to have happened recently, but little else.  Jason’s team spread out to look in buildings near the large one they had spent all morning in.
Jason went to the building behind to look at some crates that had been recently opened.  He was meticulous, if he was going to find anything, it would be small.  Indeed the crates had been opened within the last month and they had contained something from Pratt and Whitney, which meant nothing to him at the moment.  After coming up empty again Jason kicked a piece of the pallet that had broken off.  The board only moved about half a meter, but it did flip over.  On the underside, now exposed, were letters that were slightly darker than the wood.  But they were not stenciled like everything else, they were hand written.  Jason picked up the board and  looked at it closely, “SOUTH.”
Jason tested the ink and found that it was blood.  He cut a piece off and put one sample in his evidence bag and one in the pocket of this jump suit.  He took the rest of the board back to the main building and ran a DNA sample.  It was Lisa’s
Because Jason did not bring in the entire piece of wood, just enough to sample, Finn and his men did not see the word South.  It was Jason’s hope to employ his AIs over the next week or so combing the entire area South of this location, but how far South? After another two hours of searching, the investigators got together to see if there was anything worthy of a second look.  The only thing that could give them a clue was the strange markings on the road.  There were four lines running in parallel of each other.  Tiffy commented it was more like to pairs running in parallel to each other.
Jason had no idea what would make such lines and decided to take pictures with measurements and analyze it back on the ship.  All in all, there was only two clues; The religious group that had abducted Julia, had been here; They were headed South; oh, and maybe they were not as cohesive as they thought.   Hopefully that would mean that other clues to their whereabouts were coming.
Finn watched Jason the entire way back to the ship.  He knew that Jason had found something, but he was in the dark as to what it was.  Now Jason had the upper hand, but for how long.  If Finn really thought they missed something and that Jason had any real evidence, there would have been a showdown.  There wasn’t, or least not yet.
Once on the ground the two groups separated, Jason and his two AIs went below.  Tiffy tried to engage Jason, but Jason signaled for them to not talk.  Jason knew the evidence that he brought back was flimsy, too flimsy to build a case on.  There was nothing with Julia’s DNA or any evidence that Jordy had been there, so he decided to keep the Ace he had, quiet.  Hopefully this would ferret out the guilty party or at least someone that they could coerce into turning on the guilty party.
Once back in their secure compartment, Jason broke his team into two groups.  One that was investigating leads that were generated by boots on the ground.  These were leads that came in through official channels and were most likely wild goose chases.  The second group to include Tiffy would investigate the “South” clue.  Their task was simple, the two AI were just going to have to scan every square kilometer South of the take off point in a four degree arc, two degrees East of South and two degrees West of South and out a distance of one thousand kilometers which roughly calculates out to be 35 thousand square kilometers.  They were to look for any changes from before the road was swept and after.  Then analyse each change and report the ones that do not look natural.   And if that does not turn up something then they would extend it another thousand kilometer, which would take three times as long to scrub.
Jason himself took the measurements, found on the ground, and started the painstaking process of figuring out what type of vehicle could have made it. If they knew that, then they could calculate the distance it could have flown which would help the AIs concentrate on that area.  Hopefully it would be less than the original one thousand kilometers he gave his team as starting point.
Jason had to take a second and think about what it had to take to putting together something that has sat for eighty years, get it running, airworthy  and actually fly it somewhere.  Wow, that has got to be the craziest venture ever, but the evidence was there.  Something and someone took an aircraft and flew away from the location in the desert.  Now to find out what it could have been.
The data base for aircraft was quite extensive on the ship, however the distance between the wheels was just not one of those statical items to be found. It was going to require a Technical manual or a picture with a scale attached so that you could physically measure between the wheels and then use the scale to give you the actual size or distance.   This process took more than a week and the end result yielded three aircraft that were close and a dozen possibles.  The three closest were the German world war two transport aircraft called a 192 Kurier, and American or British Curtiss C-46 Commando, and the Douglas DC-2 or DC-3, and about four other machines that existed but were unlikely to be in, what use to be the United States, at the time of the fall.  The good part was that most of them had about a two thousand kilometer range.  , okay not a good part as that put the search into the ridiculous mode with more than one hundred and forty thousand square kilometers to search.   Jason instructed the AIs to start at the twenty two hundred kilometer mark and work their way back to the point of origin.  This way they might spot them sooner.
Even with the possible range of the aircraft the search has not yielded any evidence that a plane was on the ground within the search coordinates.  It was decision time as to how the investigation would proceed.  The effort to date has not produced a single piece of evidence that Julia was at that sight or with the religious congregation when they were there.  By now Jordy’s disappearance has been a point of conversation and will require its own investigation as there was no evidence to link the two cases.
Jason decided to take the two AIs that were following the bogus reports and have them concentrate on the missing mules.  Then Tiffy and Alor-Oh-five-One, who insisted on being called by his full name, were to concentrate on an area fifty miles North and South of the twenty two hundred kilometer range line.  If the aircraft did make it that far, it had to be in this area, or they went an entirely different direction and that would take years to search.  They were going to need something in the next few days or they would be forced to give up the search.
On Day three they found the Mules, Two hundred and seventy kilometers West of the swept runway and they were headed East.  Once recovered the data files were scrubbed only to discover that besides their destination and the last ten minutes of travel the rest of the data had been scrubbed.  A constant maintenance and removal subroutine had had been placed in the main processor and every ten minutes their memory allocations were erased and scrambled.  This would destroy any evidence as to where they have been and what they have seen, heard or sampled.  They had their basic programming in tack and stopped and charged on a regular basis.  Other than that, they were blank slates.  Not that humans could not have programmed them, it was just unlikely.  So, that puts Jordy back in the picture, just not definitively.
The mules reappearance was not enough to justify Jason’s departure from the Creatos, but enough to get a drone fly over, so Jason would get another chance to see what is on the other side of the mountains.  This time he would fly the drone South to the Columbia and then inland.  Once the drone was South of the old town called Spokane he would initiate a zigzag pattern until the craft reached the town.  It would have enough energy to  circle a few times and then return to the ship.  This way, if Jordy’s aircraft went down soon after takeoff, they would see it.  Or and this was a big “OR,” Jordy would see the drone and establish contact.  Jason knew that he would not, however the subject of the search was Jordy, not Julia.  The Flight was more to establish where Jordy and Julia were not.  And if this mystery aircraft had gone down sooner than later, then they might find it and confirm who flew out of Spokane.
That night at home Jason was far away and Lorin had to call him three times. “Honey. What’s wrong?”
Jason’s standard answer did not go over well.  He was going to have to explain a few things, as none of it was classified, with exception of the explosion at the cabin, that point seemed to be kept quiet. After hearing all the angles and issues with the investigation Lorin admitted that she had a headache just trying to keep all the details straight.  She also excused herself with the kids as she knew that Jason had to justify all the details or they were consumed him indefinitely.
Jason tried to sleep, but  was up at three am and could not.  He got dressed quietly and left for the ship.  It took a while for a shuttle to pick him up and take him out.  Since the explosion and Julia’s disappearance the ships were moved out to the middle of the bay for security reasons.  This made them less accessible to those that lived ashore and worked on aboard.
When Jason finally reached his desk and picked up the pad he was using to scan the points of interest noted by his team of AIs, he noticed a new email.  Jason opened as it was flagged as urgent.  He could not believe what he was reading.  They were new orders;   Jason and his family were being re-assigned to the MayFlower.

The Captain's Prerogative

    Chapter 47
The Captains Prerogative
Log Entry July 17th 2095
Captain Hanson (Personal Log)
I’m not exactly sure what Jordy was thinking.  However, they managed to get Julia out before the cabin was destroyed and they have managed to elude this Jason Knorack for quite some time.  Now, by some miracle they’ve slipped away from Eastern Washington, but to where? I’ve done as much as I can to interfere with the investigation without implicating myself, but for the most part, I watch and wait in complete oblivion as to what Jordy has in mind.. computed.
However, any further assistance would surely implicate me in this venture and end my career. That’s why I’m glad that the orders to relocate Lieutenant Knorack to the MayFlower were not blocked.  There is an old saying, keep friends close and enemies closer. Not that Lieutenant Knorack is an enemy.  It’s just that he is real good at what he’s doing and, if given enough time, will put all the pieces together.
So, my taking command of the MayFlower for her shakedown cruise around the moon and back to orbit, is still on.  And if all goes well, then we will depart for our new home planet some time in March of 2096.  Captain Chaucer will be my second and I will have four commanders for section chiefs.  This is a good crew, I’ve seen to that.  That will be quite a day
I’m excited, but apprehensive.  We have never ventured from our home in such a way.  Not with actual humans that is.  We have thought about it, dreamed about it, but we never even made it to Mars.  The world fell apart before we could even do that.  And instead of taking baby steps we are jumping in with both feet and running to a star that’s hundreds of years away.  Once there we will spend another century getting use to this place and it to us.
Not that we won’t have plenty to do for five hundred and fifty years.  The mechanical and science teams will be upgrading the engines as new tech is developed. One only hopes that we have brought enough raw materials to recreate the marvels that they dream up here on Earth.  Our speed will make it near impossible to stop along the way.  We will be the fastest man-made object ever.  The downside is that it will take us almost 263 years to get to that point, then after a mere thirty years of drifting we will have to start decelerating.  If we don’t we will simply fly by our destination at the same blistering speed.  That’s if the system doesn’t shred us into a billion particles because we will be unable to dodge any objects in our path.  At .45 light we won’t even see them coming as our sensors will only give us a few seconds of warning before the object tears through us.
Mr Monroe jokes that we will get there just in time for his scientist here on Earth to develop the stable wormhole and beat us there by a hundred years. Half the time I think he’s actually serious, but not sure. I know they are working on a micro singularity for communications, but could they actually send objects like ships through such a thing and have it survive, Again, not sure?
For now, these wormholes are as fanciful as unicorn, so we travel the old fashion.. Well the hard way.  And if their calculations are correct I will be a mere two hundred and ninety seven year old, again, only if the stasis pods work according to the engineer’s expectations. So many ifs, yet I want to go, but I don’t want to go alone…
Isn’t that sad, I’m completely surrounded day and night by individuals both machine and human and my best friend is a..is an abomination that lands somewhere between a machine and a human. Then there is Julia.  She is human, brilliant, commanding and feminine. Half the time she is confident and able to stick up to me at the same time I know that she can.. Could love me.  I know it like I know that we need to leave this planet.  If I believed in this God of hers, I would pray that he makes a way for her to join me.

Chapter 46
Standing On The Inside
Journal Entry July 18th 2095
Julia Scott
We just about gave up hope for Jordy as he did not return from his exploration on the first day.  It was well into the second day before he and Buster were spotted walking slowly toward us.  His approach was careful with a loose zigzag pattern.  We could not understand why he was operating in this manner, but it would have to wait till he actually got to the broken aircraft, now shelter.
After a quick summation of our condition; one day’s worth of water, Freyja injuries were no better and maybe a week’s worth of food.  That we did manage to cover what was left of the aircraft with sand and sagebrush to disguise its existence and we were still in the middle of a desert.
Jordy reported that he had not found anything of use in the small village that was near by, however he did get his bearing and he knew in which direction we had to travel, but was not certain as to how long it would take.  The terrane varied quite a bit and we would have to travel in a zigzag pattern so as to not give away our desired destination.   It would also make it look more natural to anyone insane enough to look that closely.
After a heated discussion of how they could do all this Jordy finally admitted that they needed help.  Luke was probably the most upset, because moving Freyja  was not a good idea, however staying in the middle of a scorching desert was even worse.  So his emotion were short circuiting his logic.  Bart finally broke in and made Jordy admit they had to call for some type of help.  I on the other hand was torn.  If I had to returned, Mr. Monroe could try to kill me again, but the alternative was to die of thirst.
After some ideas on how to get this “help” Jordy admitted that he already sent for it.  He used Busters emergency drone to send a message to Captain Hanson.  The drone would fly for as long as it could before it had to recharge and then fly some more.  At best guess the drone would be near the ship by end of business the next day.  It would then have to piggyback on a shuttle, so as to not be discovered.  Once on board the drone would find the Captains porthole and wait to be found...
“Half baked.” Julia kept saying as she shook her head.
Jordy defended his plan, “It’s better than watching all of you die.”
“And exactly how is the Captain going to help without exposing his treason?” Julia asked.  She was actually upset that Jordy would put Captain Hanson in such a position.  If Mr. Monroe found out, the good captain would be killed.  And even if the drone managed to get the message through undetected, what could the captain do in such a short period of time?  They could stretch their water a day and maybe survive for one or two more, but that was it.  Three to four days to mount a second, secret rescue, thousand of kilometers from his ships.
Jordy did not back down, “We send AIs down to Panama for maintenance at least twice a week.  This way the ship’s crew can’t reprogram them for their own purposes.”  Jordy paused, “It’s sort of a fail safe system to ensure that the humans remain loyal.”
Julia huffed at the thought. “When was the last time…”
“So, our good captain will have to program the shuttle to have a malfunction and jettison its cargo early and very close to us.  The AIs will be in Shutdown mode and can be reprogrammed.  They will be accompanied by some supplies as well.”  Jordy explained.
“Won’t they come looking for the AIs once the shuttle reaches Panama?” Luke asked.
“Yes, but it won’t be a priority and I will make it look as if scavengers took them.  The desert will erase any other evidence, so.”  Jordy paused again. “With any luck they will be written off as lost.”
“Luck?” Julia said sarcastically, “Is that what we are reduced to?”
Bart asked, “How do you know where they will drop them?”
“I gave the captain  coordinates that are about a day’s run from here, on a full charge.” Jordy admitted, “I will take Buster with me and leave him about two thirds of the way.  He can recharge so that when I get the supplies, I can load him up and send him back right away.  He will be able to make the return trip to you by the second day.”
“That puts us very close to being out of water.” Luke admitted.
“That can not be helped.  However, I would ration what you have, because it will take the drone another day to reach the fleet and then Captain Hanson will have to make the necessary arrangement, so three possibly four days here.”  Jordy admitted.
“So, we will be out of water.”  Julia wined.
“Not if you distill your urine.” Jordy responded.
“Are you kidding me!  Drink our urine!” Julia half yelled half wined.
“If it is distilled properly, it will be all water, leaving behind the impurities.” Jordy said matter of factly.  He continued, “It will buy you one or two extra days.  I will leave you a schedule for SAT com 3, as it will scan the area multiple times during my absence.
Bart stepped up, “I will ensure that it is followed.”  Then turning to Julia, “Remember our conversation of this very morning.”  He tried to get Julia to look at him, “This is the path, I know that.”
Julia did not want to hear it.  Though she knew it was right, Bart was right, but something in her just did not want to admit it.  Not now or under these circumstances.
“One more thing.  I will be bringing as many of the AIs as I can, back with me.” Jordy told the group.
“Why?” Demanded Tommy.
“Not that I need to explain to you, but I don’t have the physical strength to manipulate the rocket and its booster.  I will need assistance or I will damage the rocket or it myself.” Jordy informed the group.
Bart spoke before the others could, “So, how many do you think you will bring back.”
“If all goes well, at least three.”  Jordy was looking at the horizon, “Or as many as I can assemble from what is left after the drop.” He paused a second, “Oh, and they won’t look human, these will be worker units.”
“What does that mean?” Tommy asked.
“They are larger and less...humanoid than what you have seen so far.” Jordy said.
Julia walked back to the opening in the fuselage, “So you’re going to run out into the desert hoping for some shit to fall from the sky and we are going to sit here and drink our urine till you return with some more monsters to take us deeper into the dust bowl.”  Julia huffed, “Does that about sum up the next phase of our little journey?”
“Machines, not monsters.” Corrected Jordy.
“Wait!.  If you knew that you could not move the rockets yourself.  You son of…” With that Julia marched out mumbling to herself.  Bart started to follow but Jordy stopped him with a hand, “Leave her for now.  She needs to get used to not being in charge.”
Bart looked at Jordy, “How does a machine pick up on that?”
“Experience.” Jordy shot back, then looked at the rest of the party, “How is Freyja .”
Bart’s head dropped, “Not much better than yesterday, but no worse.”
Jordy removed his try-quarter and walked over to where Freyjan was lying.  He scanned her and then put the device away.  He looked at Luke, but said nothing.
Bart came up from behind, “So.”
Jordy hesitated, “It’s improved, but no where near good enough to travel.”
“Good thing we’re not going anywhere soon.” Said Luke with a strong sarcastic emphasis on soon.
Jordy got up from Freyja’s bed and walked to the opening that Julia had exited from, “We need to build the still.”
Bart was following with Tommy and Lisa.  Lisa spoke first, “Isn’t it like what we build for the fuel?”
Jordy said without looking back, “Not quit, we can not bring the fluid to a boil or the turbid water will allow impurities to enter the condensing chamber.”  That did not sound good. “Plus we need to be able to add fluid without having to take the system apart.”
The party followed Jordy to the left wing which was partially buried in sand and sagebrush.  They would find enough materials here to build the dish and condensing tubes, but the pan to heat the fluid in would be one of the biggest problems.  Jordy made several attempts to fashion a pan from the metal skin of the plane, but it kept ripping or splitting.  Two more attempts finally produced both a pan to boil the urine and a place to sit and relieve oneself which collected the fluid and delivered it to the still.  The heater was added and then the condensing hood with its coil.  This contraption was then moved to the rear half of the broken plane.  Once this was done everyone settled down to wait out the heat of the day.  Julia remained at her watch station looking out over the dust bowl.
Bart announced, “Fifteen minutes till SAT com 3.”  Which started a scurry to get all that they were doing covered up before the spy flew over.
Jordy spent the rest of the day charging with Buster.  Everyone kept to themselves as they settled into their new environment.  It was easy for a machine to deal with this reality, they did not depend on water, but the humans did, and not knowing what would happen in the next few days would play tricks on their minds.  It did not help that they would have little to occupy themselves with.  No, this was a recipe for disaster.  Julia knew that she would go crazy sitting on the sand hill looking at the same brown and tan landscape, but venturing out in this wasteland would mean certain death.  So here she would sits, physically.  But mentally she would try to solve this problem…
