Journal Entry July 18th 2095
Julia Scott
We just about gave up hope for Jordy as he did not return from his exploration on the first day. It was well into the second day before he and Buster were spotted walking slowly toward us. His approach was careful with a loose zigzag pattern. We could not understand why he was operating in this manner, but it would have to wait till he actually got to the broken aircraft, now shelter.
After a quick summation of our condition; one day’s worth of water, Freyja injuries were no better and maybe a week’s worth of food. That we did manage to cover what was left of the aircraft with sand and sagebrush to disguise its existence and we were still in the middle of a desert.
Jordy reported that he had not found anything of use in the small village that was near by, however he did get his bearing and he knew in which direction we had to travel, but was not certain as to how long it would take. The terrane varied quite a bit and we would have to travel in a zigzag pattern so as to not give away our desired destination. It would also make it look more natural to anyone insane enough to look that closely.
After a heated discussion of how they could do all this Jordy finally admitted that they needed help. Luke was probably the most upset, because moving Freyja was not a good idea, however staying in the middle of a scorching desert was even worse. So his emotion were short circuiting his logic. Bart finally broke in and made Jordy admit they had to call for some type of help. I on the other hand was torn. If I had to returned, Mr. Monroe could try to kill me again, but the alternative was to die of thirst.
After some ideas on how to get this “help” Jordy admitted that he already sent for it. He used Busters emergency drone to send a message to Captain Hanson. The drone would fly for as long as it could before it had to recharge and then fly some more. At best guess the drone would be near the ship by end of business the next day. It would then have to piggyback on a shuttle, so as to not be discovered. Once on board the drone would find the Captains porthole and wait to be found...
“Half baked.” Julia kept saying as she shook her head.
Jordy defended his plan, “It’s better than watching all of you die.”
“And exactly how is the Captain going to help without exposing his treason?” Julia asked. She was actually upset that Jordy would put Captain Hanson in such a position. If Mr. Monroe found out, the good captain would be killed. And even if the drone managed to get the message through undetected, what could the captain do in such a short period of time? They could stretch their water a day and maybe survive for one or two more, but that was it. Three to four days to mount a second, secret rescue, thousand of kilometers from his ships.
Jordy did not back down, “We send AIs down to Panama for maintenance at least twice a week. This way the ship’s crew can’t reprogram them for their own purposes.” Jordy paused, “It’s sort of a fail safe system to ensure that the humans remain loyal.”
Julia huffed at the thought. “When was the last time…”
“So, our good captain will have to program the shuttle to have a malfunction and jettison its cargo early and very close to us. The AIs will be in Shutdown mode and can be reprogrammed. They will be accompanied by some supplies as well.” Jordy explained.
“Won’t they come looking for the AIs once the shuttle reaches Panama?” Luke asked.
“Yes, but it won’t be a priority and I will make it look as if scavengers took them. The desert will erase any other evidence, so.” Jordy paused again. “With any luck they will be written off as lost.”
“Luck?” Julia said sarcastically, “Is that what we are reduced to?”
Bart asked, “How do you know where they will drop them?”
“I gave the captain coordinates that are about a day’s run from here, on a full charge.” Jordy admitted, “I will take Buster with me and leave him about two thirds of the way. He can recharge so that when I get the supplies, I can load him up and send him back right away. He will be able to make the return trip to you by the second day.”
“That puts us very close to being out of water.” Luke admitted.
“That can not be helped. However, I would ration what you have, because it will take the drone another day to reach the fleet and then Captain Hanson will have to make the necessary arrangement, so three possibly four days here.” Jordy admitted.
“So, we will be out of water.” Julia wined.
“Not if you distill your urine.” Jordy responded.
“Are you kidding me! Drink our urine!” Julia half yelled half wined.
“If it is distilled properly, it will be all water, leaving behind the impurities.” Jordy said matter of factly. He continued, “It will buy you one or two extra days. I will leave you a schedule for SAT com 3, as it will scan the area multiple times during my absence.
Bart stepped up, “I will ensure that it is followed.” Then turning to Julia, “Remember our conversation of this very morning.” He tried to get Julia to look at him, “This is the path, I know that.”
Julia did not want to hear it. Though she knew it was right, Bart was right, but something in her just did not want to admit it. Not now or under these circumstances.
“One more thing. I will be bringing as many of the AIs as I can, back with me.” Jordy told the group.
“Why?” Demanded Tommy.
“Not that I need to explain to you, but I don’t have the physical strength to manipulate the rocket and its booster. I will need assistance or I will damage the rocket or it myself.” Jordy informed the group.
Bart spoke before the others could, “So, how many do you think you will bring back.”
“If all goes well, at least three.” Jordy was looking at the horizon, “Or as many as I can assemble from what is left after the drop.” He paused a second, “Oh, and they won’t look human, these will be worker units.”
“What does that mean?” Tommy asked.
“They are larger and less...humanoid than what you have seen so far.” Jordy said.
Julia walked back to the opening in the fuselage, “So you’re going to run out into the desert hoping for some shit to fall from the sky and we are going to sit here and drink our urine till you return with some more monsters to take us deeper into the dust bowl.” Julia huffed, “Does that about sum up the next phase of our little journey?”
“Machines, not monsters.” Corrected Jordy.
“Wait!. If you knew that you could not move the rockets yourself. You son of…” With that Julia marched out mumbling to herself. Bart started to follow but Jordy stopped him with a hand, “Leave her for now. She needs to get used to not being in charge.”
Bart looked at Jordy, “How does a machine pick up on that?”
“Experience.” Jordy shot back, then looked at the rest of the party, “How is Freyja .”
Bart’s head dropped, “Not much better than yesterday, but no worse.”
Jordy removed his try-quarter and walked over to where Freyjan was lying. He scanned her and then put the device away. He looked at Luke, but said nothing.
Bart came up from behind, “So.”
Jordy hesitated, “It’s improved, but no where near good enough to travel.”
“Good thing we’re not going anywhere soon.” Said Luke with a strong sarcastic emphasis on soon.
Jordy got up from Freyja’s bed and walked to the opening that Julia had exited from, “We need to build the still.”
Bart was following with Tommy and Lisa. Lisa spoke first, “Isn’t it like what we build for the fuel?”
Jordy said without looking back, “Not quit, we can not bring the fluid to a boil or the turbid water will allow impurities to enter the condensing chamber.” That did not sound good. “Plus we need to be able to add fluid without having to take the system apart.”
The party followed Jordy to the left wing which was partially buried in sand and sagebrush. They would find enough materials here to build the dish and condensing tubes, but the pan to heat the fluid in would be one of the biggest problems. Jordy made several attempts to fashion a pan from the metal skin of the plane, but it kept ripping or splitting. Two more attempts finally produced both a pan to boil the urine and a place to sit and relieve oneself which collected the fluid and delivered it to the still. The heater was added and then the condensing hood with its coil. This contraption was then moved to the rear half of the broken plane. Once this was done everyone settled down to wait out the heat of the day. Julia remained at her watch station looking out over the dust bowl.
Bart announced, “Fifteen minutes till SAT com 3.” Which started a scurry to get all that they were doing covered up before the spy flew over.
Jordy spent the rest of the day charging with Buster. Everyone kept to themselves as they settled into their new environment. It was easy for a machine to deal with this reality, they did not depend on water, but the humans did, and not knowing what would happen in the next few days would play tricks on their minds. It did not help that they would have little to occupy themselves with. No, this was a recipe for disaster. Julia knew that she would go crazy sitting on the sand hill looking at the same brown and tan landscape, but venturing out in this wasteland would mean certain death. So here she would sits, physically. But mentally she would try to solve this problem…
